One of my favorite artists Pablo Picasso once said “Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success”.

At Boyum IT Solutions, our roadmaps serve as our plan to achieve our strategic goals. In a small entrepreneurial company like ours, there is no shortage of great ideas. If you’ve listed to the interview with our founder Mikael Boyum in our podcast, you’ll probably remember that he said that he was once banned from bringing up new ideas more than once a week by our lead developer Rasmus Wulff Jensen. One of the beauties of the software industry is unlimited opportunities to create and build something great. It is far from the norm that the stuff being build turns out great, but that is another story.

Roadmaps help us to stay on track. They are, as Picasso put it, a vehicle for us to achieve our strategic goals and vision. Without our roadmaps, we would probably be distracted by a lot of shiny objects that come our way every week. We generate a ton of ideas internally; we get requests from our end-users; we get ideas from consultants implementing our solutions and we receive support tickets from frustrated partners when things don’t work the way they expect. Without our roadmaps and our goals, we would probably be distracted and work on whatever short-term topics that are hot right now.

How do we conceive our roadmaps? All our roadmaps must have a red thread to the vision of the respective product to our global product vision and finally to our company vision. Every quarter we evaluate the ideas and problems that we want to address in our roadmaps. This effort is led by the product managers for the respective product. They evaluate the opportunities up against our goals and vision and get feedback from our internal experts and from partners who take part in our co-innovation program. During development, we also get feedback when we need to understand if we have built the features right. I love sitting in on these sessions to learn more about the users and to validate our ideas.

Lastly, we also get inspiration from our community on the Boyum Help Center.  On the community site, we have dedicated channels for feature requests for each product. Here you will find requests from other users and you can vote and comment on their ideas. If you don’t find your idea on the site, you can go ahead and post it on the site. Make the description as captivating and interesting as possible so that other users understand your idea and will vote for it. We review all ideas posted on the community, but we highly recommend that you promote your ideas in your network so that it can get enough votes to be considered for the roadmap. Every quarter we consider community requests for our roadmaps, so let your voice be heard and tell us what you need.
